Racing … a different kind

by James on Jul.15, 2009, under Racing

On the 4th of July I watched these dedicated people participate in the road race before the parade. I felt inspired to get out there and start running. I started about two weeks ago and it was brutal, but I quickly worked my way up to running 3 miles in the mornings before work. In addition my friend Christine has been helping me get out there and do some additional training by doing sprints and such.

Last Wednesday I went to check out the road race that runs in conjunction with Live on the Lake. It starts at Pittsfield State forest and is a 3.5 mile loop. I just watched the start and finish as I wasn’t feeling up to the challenge. I ran some more over the last week and got comfortable with the 3 mile run. Yesterday Christine and I ran the course to see if I could actually make it. I was able to do so. We took it easy and ran the 3.5 miles in about 28 minutes.

Today I entered my first running road race. I was a little nervous because it was 81 degrees out, I know how hard I can push myself and I didn’t want to go too hard too soon and not be able to make it. So the race started and I took off much faster than I wanted. Once we got about .3 miles into it I was able to pull myself back. I got passed early by a couple people, but hung with them. As we got to the hills I made up ground and was able to pass them back and also pass a couple other people by the halfway point. I was feeling very good until the last mile … it was a struggle. I had to push myself to make sure I finished. I ended up coming across the line 14th at 25:15 which is an average of 7:13min/mile. There were 34 runners in this race, so I am very pleased with the result.

There are 6 more rounds to go for this local series and I hope to make each one. I had a lot of fun!

Now back up to the race track this weekend for LRRS Round 6! Hope this exercise helps my racing (=

My current championship standings at the half way mark:
MWSS – 7th
MWSB – 8th
HWSB – 8th
MWGP – 11th

2009 Loudon Classic Race Report

by James on Jun.15, 2009, under Racing

Thursday
I arrived at the track Wednesday around 10pm. Got the essentials setup and went to bed shortly after. The weather report for Thursday looked like rain, so I was going to make a decision about practice in the morning. Woke up at 7 to find it was still dry and it almost looked like the sun was going to poke through. I signed up for practice (all day) and hoped for the best.

It took me all morning to finally get comfortable with the new turn 1 and 1a. It was very difficult to break the habit of the old turn 1, but by the 4th session I was starting to feel good about it. We broke for lunch, and I changed the oil in the bike. Did afternoon sessions, changing out the rear tire for the last one and ended the day with a great session. We never saw any ran and I got about 90-100 laps in for the day. We were running 14-16 lap sessions. It was great!

Friday
Based on the weather report it looked like rain rain rain for Friday. I mounted up the rains Thursday night and sure enough, it poured all night into the morning. Woke to a very wet track. This was my first time on Pirelli rains. I had heard horror stories about the rear, but once I got out there I found that I was having more issues with the front. Come to find out the pressures I was running were too high. Both practices were wet, and I just felt pretty slow. Did get down to the 31s, but am about 2 seconds of my normal rain pace. Not what I had in mind for the start of my weekend.

MWSB
Gridded 2D for this race. This race is somewhat of a blur for me. We had 3 red flags in the first go around, then we tried to rerun later in the day, which quickly ended in a red flag as well. The first two starts I got a great launch and was with the front group for the opening lap. The 3rd restart I got an awful start. They pulled us in after the 3rd red flag. I was having issues with the rear tire, so I decided to get a new one. All my races Friday and Saturday would allow me to run a slick so I figured why not and got one. We went out for the restart of the race later in the day, and after two laps it was quickly red flagged. Loved the grip of the slick though! I ended up being scored 10th.

MWGP (Dash for Cash)
Gridded 3D here. This race had 2 red flags before things really got underway. On the 3rd start Joel beat me to turn 1. He quickly pulled a gap on me and I had to work hard to make up that ground. He had told me he was catching me in 11 during the last race. With that knowledge I worked hard to get faster in 11 and that is where I started to make up ground. 3rd lap into this restart I finally had the opportunity to get by him on the entrance to 12. He got side by side with me going into 1 but I wasn’t going to let him have it back and broke later. I saw Jason Carter ahead and thought I might be able to chase him down. The last two laps I put my head down and really closed the gap getting right up on him in turn 11. I made the same pass into 12 that I made on Joel, but I couldn’t square up the exit enough to get a good drive. As we approached the start finish Jason retook the position. I finished in 12th, but it was a fun race! My rear tire was about 3psi to low, so it was getting very greasy as the race went on, but kept it on the wheels and pleased with the finish. It was great battling with Joel and getting a tow from Carter.

Saturday
I only had 1 race and 1 qualifying scheduled for today. They announced in the riders meeting that they were doing free entry for the ASRA Superstock race because of lack of entries. So I signed up for this, which was the first qualifying session of the day. I quickly headed back to the pit to get slick mounted and on the warmers. They ended up getting 32 entries for Superstock … it’s amazing what a free race will do. (=

Qualifying
I did not know really want to expect here, but Degsy had come over from BostonMoto to offer his help for the sessions. We talked tires and suspension for a bit then he headed out to hot pit. In the first qualifying session (Superstock) I had the rear slick on the bike. After 3 laps I came in to hot pit we made a quick adjustment to the pressures and I went back out, which was a nice improvement. It was sticking better coming off the corners. I could only get down to the low 17s, but this was good enough to put me 9th, which was 3rd row on the grid. My goal was to be at least on Row 3, because I knew I could still get a good jump from there.

My 2nd qualifying session was for Sportbike, which was going to be the feature race on Sunday. It was very important for me to do well here. I had a new DOT for this session and after discussing bike setup with Degsy some more we decided to make an adjustment to the compression on the rear shock. I went out for qualifying and the bike felt great! After 4 minutes or so, the session was red flagged and we had to sit on hot pit for a bit. We left things as they were and went back out for the last 10 minutes. I was able to turn my fastest lap times of the weekend and secure 10th place at the end of the session against a very competitive field. I was very pleased and ready for tomorrow’s races.

HWSB
I got a good start here, but as usual, after the first lap the front pack started to break away. I was in a comfortable 9th place until I hit a false neutral into turn 1. My brain turned off just long enough where I had to bail and go around the banking. As I approached turn 2 control they had me slow down, and I looked back and saw Joel coming through 1a. Turn 2 control slowed me down for what felt like forever, then finally let me go as I tore off down the back straight knowing that Joel was right on me now. I pushed hard to stay ahead but my rear was starting to go off quickly. I was having a tough time coming off the left hand corners. On lap 7 the red flag had come out, we were past halfway, race over. Finished 9th.

Sunday
It poured all night and all morning. Mounted up the rains and went out for 3 sessions of practice. Got better with each one, but was still WAY off pace. I should have been sub 30s, but was stuck in the 31s. Weather didn’t look to improve for the first race of the day so the rains stayed on.

MWSS
Gridded 3A got a GREAT start. I was 4th into turn 1. I followed the leaders very closely for the first lap and a half. 141 got by me in turn 3 on lap 2. I followed him closely and it looked like I could hang with him. We came around for lap 3 and work our way through turns 1 and 1a. I closed the gap on him and knew this could be a good race for 4th. We get through turn 2 and I match his acceleration out. All of a sudden I see the tail end of my bike in my peripheral … I knew this wasn’t going to end well. I tried to grip the tank with my knees and hold on to it, but the bike caught, slipped, then caught again sending me skyward. I landed, rolled a little and slide backwards looking at the oncoming bikes. Everyone did a great job avoiding me and my bike (THANK YOU!). Race red flagged. Pick up the bike, brake lever broke, so I’m done for this race. DNF

ASRA Superstock
Rain had stopped and the track was drying quickly. It was still too wet for DOTs/Slicks but too dry for rains. Rains were already on, so I went with rains. Almost everyone else on the grid made the same decision. I was gridded 3B and got an ok start. The front 6 quickly pulled away from me and I stayed in a very comfortable 7th for the entire race. The track was pretty much dry except for 3 areas, so I could just feel the rain tires getting destroyed. I kept it on the wheels and finished my first ASRA Pro race in 7th place! My laptimes were less than 3 seconds off the lead group. I felt like if I had pushed a little harder I could have been up there, but having just come off the highside I was being conservative. I was very happy to have just run and finished my first pro race and end up in the Top 10.

ASRA Sportbike
This was the focus of my weekend. It was a very competitive grid and I knew I was going to have to ride hard to do well. At this point the track was completely dry. I was gridded 3C for this race and got a pretty good start which put me in 7th going into turn 1. Brent quickly got by me in turn 3. On lap 2 Martire tried to make a pass on me into turn 6 but I was able to hold him off. On the next lap he got me in turn 3, went a little wide and I tried to take him back up the inside of turn 4, but he got the better drive and beat me over the hill. I tucked in behind him and followed closely for the first half of the race. BostonMoto was running pit board for me which let me know that I had a good lead on the next position. I pushed hard for the first 13 laps, clicking off consistent low 16s. Martire finally started to pull enough of a gap on me that I knew I couldn’t make it up without pushing harder. BostonMoto wrote EASY on the pit board so I backed the pace down to the low 17s. Stearns had crashed out in turn 11, so I was in 8th at this point and just wanted to hold the position. On my white flag lap I came into turn 1 and started to hear a bike behind me. I was pretty confused about who was there. As I went through 1a a green bike came up the inside of me. My first thought was to drive hard to turn 2, but then I saw #4 and realized it was Greenwood so I tried to give room to him as he went by with Narbonne on his heels. When I was exiting turn 2 I took a look back to make sure there was nobody else in that battle as I didn’t want to get in the way. At this point I had the best seat in the house and got to watch Narbonne make the last lap pass in turn 6. I held my position and finished in 8th place!

Overview
Overall I had a great weekend! The classic is always a mixed bag for me, but I am lucky this year that the crash didn’t result in much damage to the bike and I was able to get back out there quickly and still ride hard. I had a blast running in the ASRA races, including qualifying. It just had a different feel to it and it is something I hope to do again soon (NJMP Round in July hopefully). I couldn’t be happier with my finishes in my first ASRA event.

I have never run so many laps in a weekend. I was worried about my endurance to do so, but feel very good about how well I did. It has been a lot of work and I feel like I’m really starting to see improvement again.

I have many people to thank from this weekend. First my parents for coming up for the entire weekend (sorry for crashing in front of you)! Special thank you to Joel and Geno for the extra help on Sunday to fix the bike, get my tires mounted and ready for me while I was on track. Congratulations to the entire ECK-Racing team for an awesome weekend and their continued support (sorry Arcy about the bodywork)! Congrats to Pete on his 14th place in his first ASRA Pro Thunderbike Race!

Thank you to everyone else that came up for the weekend including my Uncle Rick, Carri and Shawn, Chris, Josh, Noah, Haley, Jeremy and Family. It was so great to have to support from all of you! Extra thank you to Mike Martire and BostonMoto for all their help this weekend as I continue to get the bike sorted out.

LRRS Round 3 Press Release

by James on Jun.02, 2009, under Racing

http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=36786

Middleweight Grand Prix

The $1500 Dash for Cash attracted a large crowd trackside along chicanes. Nine rows of experts and amateurs took the grid split into two waves. Shane Narbonne grabbed the holeshot aboard his Dunlop-shod DAS Performance.com GSX-R600. Christian Cronin trailed on his Dunlop sponsored R6 followed by Jeff Wood on the Higgins Powersports/Roadracing World ZX-6R and Steve Giacomaro on his Michelin equipped Orient Express Yamaha. Scott Greenwood’s Argo ZX-6R ran fifth, with Cory Hildebrand rounding out the top six. Wood took over the point by the fourth lap with Greenwood displacing Giacomaro, and that was it until a red flag stopped racing on lap six.

The grid was re-set according to running order. Narbonne grabbed another holeshot over Wood, and the two gapped the field, pacing nearly two seconds quicker then Cronin and Greenwood. The bulk of that time appeared to come from the chicanes. Narbonne used brute force to muscle his machine through the barriers with Wood leaning more on precision. Wood soon took over the point with Narbonne pressuring until lap ten, when he suddenly slowed and dropped back through the field to finish fourth. Wood cruised to the win, followed by Cronin and Greenwood. Further back; Ivan Debord prevailed in a slug fest over Zev Ginsberg, Zach Holcomb and James Kupernik for the last purse-paying position of 8th place. Tyler Sweeney beat the amateurs aboard his SRE/Brian Kent/Dunlop Honda RS250.

LRRS Round 3 – Sunday

by James on May.31, 2009, under Racing

Morning Practice

Practice this morning was great! I made a change to the rear suspension to try and sort out my issues exiting turn 10. What a difference the one change made. Turn 10 not only felt better, but I was able to get a much better drive off all the corners. I’m very pleased with the change and look forward to the races today! I had a couple people come up to me telling me how quick I looked in the 2nd practice. I felt it, so it was good to hear. John Owens, who has seen me turn hundreds of laps on this track even commented that I was looking fast through turn 3 today. That got me motivated for the races!

MWSS

Gridded 3B, not thrilled with the inside with the new setup, but have to make the best of it. I got a bad launch, wheelie the bike. I quickly got it settled though and made a late brake manuver into 1 to take 7th behind #91. I was able to hang right with the group for the first 2 laps. I was thrilled! At the end of lap 2, 141 got by me in turn 11. I followed him closely for the next two laps. We quickly came up on an Amatuer coming out of 7. 141 got around quickly in 9, but I was not so lucky. I got stuck and had to wait for the exit of 10. At that time 61, gained on me, and tried to pass me in 11, but I was able to beat him to turn 12 and hold the position. I made time back up on 141 through the chicanes and didn’t loose too much off the corners. Lap 6 I knew I had 61 on my tail along with Jones and Holcomb right there as well. I continued to hold them off but as we came out of 10 I could see another amatuer up the track, going through 11. 141 is close enough to get him on the front straight and I knew I had to try hard to get by before turn 1. I drive hard out of 12 and try to brake very late, but didn’t have room to make a clean pass, so I fall in line through the first chicane and set him up to take the inside on the exit. We get side by side into the 2nd chicane, but he didn’t give an inch, so I had to fall in behind again. 141 is now gone and I know the 3 guys are on right there with me. I come out of  the last chicane and pass the amatuer. I hold the position for the rest of the lap and we come around to take the white flag. I try to put a gap on the group through the chicanes as I have been quick there this weekend. Apparently I didn’t do a good enough job as 61 passed me on the inside of turn 3. I squared up the corner and tried to retake the position up 4. We were side by side, but he had a better drive. We get into 6 and I follow him through the back section. I tried to line up a pass in 11, but he was just too quick for me, so I knew that I was going to have to settle for 9th. 61 finished .2 ahead of me, with Holcomb .12 behind me and Jones 1.4 behind him. Great battle! Love racing with these guys!

HWSB

So it rained in race 5, but the track dried for race 9. We went out for the warm up lap to a completely dry track. They called a 15 minute break to see how the weather turned out as it was starting to drizzle. We head back into the pits and I am stuck on what to do. Its not raining yet so I wait a minute. Soon it looks like the sky is going to open up, so we start to scramble to get the rains on. I have to get the front mounted on the rim, so we work quickly get that pulled off so Noel can get it over to Boston Moto to get swapped. As we do that, I hear 2nd call. We tried as best we could but given the amount of time and having to swap a tire, 3rd call came and went. Didn’t get to make it out. Its too bad, I do well in the rain and would have loved to get out there. This is my own fault as I snapped a rotor bolt on my rain wheel last weekend and didn’t fix it in time. Live and learn. It will be fixed for next weekend. We probably could have atleast gotten half the race in before the rain started, but what can you do.

Weekend Overview

Overall this weekend was very successful for me as far as getting the bike sorted out. I feel like I am much closer to getting the bike to where it was last year and I’m hoping for a strong showing at the Loudon Classic in 2 weeks. I really had fun with the alternate configuration this weekend. I was fun to flick the bike through the chicanes dragging knee in and out of them. I have to tip my hat to all the racers for making smart decisions at the start of the races so that we all got through the new section safely. It made for what could have been a tough weekend a very fun weekend. It was frustrating with the mechanical issue Saturday and not being able to make the 2nd race today (Sunday), but I would rather have those happen now then at the Classic.

Thanks to all that came up even if they were not racing to support everyone out there. It is very much appriciated! Thanks to the entire ECK-Racing team for another fun weekend. Thanks to our sponsors TonysTrackDays.com, Pine Motorparts/PBE Specialists, Phoenix Graphics, Woodcraft, Moon Performance, RJ’s Motorsport, Motorcycles of Manchester, and BostonMoto-Pirelli.

LRRS Round 3 – Saturday

by James on May.30, 2009, under Racing

Spent Friday morning trying to get the newly rebuilt calipers to work. Finally by 10:30am I had pressure in the lever and decided to head up to the track. Get up to the track and finish bleeding the brakes, then snap a bolt on the clip-on clamp. So the money I saved for practice was spent on a new clamp set. Good start to the weekend. I headed out to watch practice as the track has an alternate configuration this weekend because of the construction. Looks interesting …

Saturday:

Got the bike squared away and went through tech and headed out for practice. First time on the new layout. My biggest concern at first was the start of the races. It is very tight in turn 1 with the first chicane. At the end of the 2nd practice I started to feel like I was finding my rhythm through there. Seems kind of fun actually. The rebuilt calipers feel great and almost all my chatter is gone finally!

MWSB:

Got a great start and was 5th on lap 1, but quickly the red flag came out. Restart, and I’m 6th on lap 1. Lap 2, #61 got by me, then lap 3 Zach (#79) got by. I stayed with Zach hoping to make a move on him later in the race. As I came over turn 5 on lap 5 I went to shift into 4th gear and the shifter snapped … race over for me. I ride around and pit in … not what I had in mind.

It was the bolt off the quick shifter that snapped. Not pleased at all. Expensive part. I’ll be calling power commander monday about this.

MWGP:

Get an ok start, but not great. I believe I’m 11th or so. I get into a nice groove and start knocking seconds of my times from earlier today. I catch two people and pass them, feel very good. As I start to make ground on the next group the red flag comes out. I had just seen the halfway flag, so I know we are in for another restart. Sure enough, 7 lap restart. I got an ok launch, but couldn’t get through traffic quick enough before the first chicane. I tried to make a move to set myself up for the exit, but it quickly became a parking lot and I got stuck. Two guys quickly went around 3 of us. On the 2nd lap of the restart Ray (#71) tried to come up the inside of me in turn 1 but I was able to hold him off. I spent the last part of this race catching #18. I would make up so much ground in the corners, but his 848 just pulled on me coming out. I finally started to make my way closer to him and found a couple spots where I could make my move. We get to the final lap and I have to get by. I match his drive as best I can out of every corner and stay close. I know my only chance is in 12, to close the door on him and get a good drive. I stay close as we head over 8 into 9 and through 10. As we enter 11 I keep my corner speed up and go to the outside, squirt the throttle and shoot up the inside as we enter 12. I made the pass stick and got on the throttle hard coming out of 12 holding him off to the line by .06 with Ray coming in .31 behind me. Great 3 way battle for 11th, which this week I am happy to have come out on top of.

I really am having fun with this new configuration of the track. Its very different but fun. The starts are still a little hairy, but everyone is keeping their head about them, which is great to see. I started out in practice running in the 26s, and I got down to a high 21 and 22s in the last race today. I think I have found time in other place of the track as well and hope this translates to better times once the normal configuration is back.

LRRS Round 2 – May 1-3, 2009

Friday:
Had every intention of skipping Friday practice and saving the $100. Woke up and saw the sun was out and the weather report looked promising. I hadn’t done any packing for the weekend yet, so I just started to throw stuff in the truck and trailer and headed up to Loudon. Arrived at 12:30, setup and signed up for practice.
I got about 5 laps in on the first session, then it started to rain. I came into the pits and it started to pour. Rain lasted about 15 minutes. Sun came out and dried the track within an hour. I got out on a dry track for the last two sessions. My rear tire was starting to go off pretty quick, but I was still able to turn 18s, and a high 17. I knew that I could get back into the 16s with a fresh tire on Saturday. It Ended up being money well spent for practice.

Saturday:
Woke up to rain, but just enough to make the track damp. Sat out the first round of practice while the track dried out. By the second round of practice the track was dry and I was able to get some good morning laps in. Was in the 18s, rear tire is done, but I feel like my mind and body are ready to go.

MWSB:
Gridded 3A. I got a good launch, but the bike didn’t shift into 2nd or 3rd gears right away so I started to get consumed by the pack. I hold the throttle open a little longer once I find 3rd, Joel (404) is just in front of me and I tuck up the inside of him going into turn 1. We are making our way through 1a and Mike M. goes down, and gets hit by at least 1 rider (he is ok). Everyone else stays up and we make our way through 2, in the mess I ended up in the top 6, but the red flags came out pretty quickly. Restart.
Got a better launch this time, and was able to find both 2nd and 3rd gear successfully. I was 7th on lap 1. #61 got by me on lap 2, then #10 got by me in turn 3 on lap 3. Laps 2 and 3 I was back in to the 16s again. I was now in a comfortable 9th place and rode around in the low 17s for 3 laps. The last two laps I made some adjustments and got back to the mid-16s finishing 14 seconds ahead of 10th and 11 seconds behind 8th. Pretty uneventful race, but very pleased with my finish (best in class for me).

MWGP (Dash for Cash):
Gridded 3C. I got a very good launch, but turn 1, 1a, and 2 were a mess. I went wide in 1 which hurt me in 1a and 2. I had no drive out of 2. I am not sure of my position. As the race sorted itself out it became a 3 way battle for 12th between #141, #79 and me. I was following 141. The first move I made was in 2. I followed close in 1, 1a and went around the outside of 1a and put myself on the inside of 2 at turn in giving me the position. He quickly got me back on the outside of 11 (I am awful here). My next attempt was in turn 3 on the inside. I made the pass, but didn’t square up the corner enough, so 141 tucked up the inside going up 4 and 79 was able to capitalize on my lack of drive up 4. 79 got to the front of our group and put a small gap between him and us. We started to come up on traffic and the gap closed down, but my focus was on 141. 3 laps from the end I made the same move in turn 3 again, but this time was able to make it stick. I tried to hunt down 79, but couldn’t close the gap fast enough. Last lap I knew 141 was right behind me. As I headed up 4 I heard him coming up behind me. As we crested turn 5 we were side by side heading into 6. It was a who is going to brake later battle. The first two cones went by and I gave in and rolled off and tucked in behind him. Chased him over the back half of the track hoping to make a move in 11, but he got a better drive out of 10. My last chance was on the front straight, but I knew from following him around that my bike was down on power. I got through the chicane quickly and rolled on the throttle hard and started to close in, but as we stood the bikes up he start to pull away. The three of us finished within half a second of each other. It was a great race! I ran consistently in the high 16s for the race and did a 16.1 on the last lap. Both 171 and 79 dipped into the 15s that race.

I really feel like I’m on the edge of getting into the 15s. I believe I know what I have to do to get there, it’s just executing on it. Following both those guys I believe I got a little quicker through 11. I was talking with Zach (79) after the race and he told me where he was catching me the most, which is the exit of 10. I will work on this in practice tomorrow.

Sunday:
I had high hopes for today based on the lap times I put down on Saturday. I was the first one out for practice both sessions and got the most laps in out of anyone. I got my times very close to race pace and was ready to go. When I came in from 2nd practice, I had noticed my tire was starting to shred on the left side. I had increased my pressure by 2 PSI before I went as a test, but was surprised to see this. I dropped the pressure slightly for the first race.

MWSS:
Gridded 3A and I get a good start off the line. I am 7th into turn 1 and stick with the front group for the first lap. As we came out onto the front straight the rear started to spin up on the exit … I was wondering if I took a bad line through 12. As I enter turn 1 I give the throttle a turn and the rear steps out again. Now I know the left is on its way out. Time to be more careful coming off the corners. I put my head down and try to brake less and carry more corner speed, but I know 141 is right behind me. Sure enough he drives past me on the exit of 12 (I believe) on lap 3. I try to hang with him but I have nothing for him. I make up some ground under braking, but either over brake into the corner and/or can’t get the power down on the exit. I’m comfortably in 8th and finish the race clicking off mid 17s. I finished 13 seconds in front of 9th and 5 seconds behind Zev (#141). I came into the pits and the tire pressures were on the high side, so I dropped them down a couple pounds for the next race.

HWSB:
Gridded 3A again, I got a great start for this race. I was right with the front group for lap 1. As usual, they started to pull away, but not as quick this time. I did a 1:19 on the out lap which is where I was at last year. I felt that controlled aggression that is need at the start of the race to get up front. I was right on #91’s rear tire for lap 2. As we entered turn 6, #6 went by me and I tucked in behind him. As we went over turn 8 Rick (#6) setup Brent (#91) for a pass on the outside of 9. Brent went wide which forced Rick wide as well. I was able to tuck up the inside of both of them, but Rick got me back near the apex of 10 and I followed him into 11. Rick quickly checked out, but I could hear Brent’s 848 right behind me. I put my head down and tried to click of consistent laps. I had better rear traction, but still not great. I couldn’t accelerate between 1 and 1a, which didn’t help me coming out of turn 2. I clicked off laps in the high 16 low 17s. The last two laps I clearly heard someone behind me each time up turn 4. On the last lap, sure enough Alex (#100) got me going into turn 6. I followed him and tried to find a way by. I thought about a bonsai move into turn 11, but couldn’t pull it off, so I squared up turn 12 to try and get the drive on the front straight but I didn’t have it today and he beat me out by 3 tenths of a second to the line to finish 8th. I had a lot of fun this race though and a great way to end the weekend.

Overall from a results standpoint this was a good weekend for me. As I continue to say, if I can get into the top 10 with this group, I’m very pleased. I was able to pull out two 8th place finishes, a 9th and a 14th this weekend. I did get my times down to last year’s pace, but I am feel frustrated that I am still stuck here. I feel like I have found more time in parts of the track and just wondering what I am missing to get into the 15s. Just need to get out there more and keep turning laps.
Thanks so much to all that came up to support us this weekend, especially Tim, Jess and Ken. It was great seeing you all up there.
