Racing … a different kind

by James on Jul.15, 2009, under Racing

On the 4th of July I watched these dedicated people participate in the road race before the parade. I felt inspired to get out there and start running. I started about two weeks ago and it was brutal, but I quickly worked my way up to running 3 miles in the mornings before work. In addition my friend Christine has been helping me get out there and do some additional training by doing sprints and such.

Last Wednesday I went to check out the road race that runs in conjunction with Live on the Lake. It starts at Pittsfield State forest and is a 3.5 mile loop. I just watched the start and finish as I wasn’t feeling up to the challenge. I ran some more over the last week and got comfortable with the 3 mile run. Yesterday Christine and I ran the course to see if I could actually make it. I was able to do so. We took it easy and ran the 3.5 miles in about 28 minutes.

Today I entered my first running road race. I was a little nervous because it was 81 degrees out, I know how hard I can push myself and I didn’t want to go too hard too soon and not be able to make it. So the race started and I took off much faster than I wanted. Once we got about .3 miles into it I was able to pull myself back. I got passed early by a couple people, but hung with them. As we got to the hills I made up ground and was able to pass them back and also pass a couple other people by the halfway point. I was feeling very good until the last mile … it was a struggle. I had to push myself to make sure I finished. I ended up coming across the line 14th at 25:15 which is an average of 7:13min/mile. There were 34 runners in this race, so I am very pleased with the result.

There are 6 more rounds to go for this local series and I hope to make each one. I had a lot of fun!

Now back up to the race track this weekend for LRRS Round 6! Hope this exercise helps my racing (=

My current championship standings at the half way mark:
MWSS – 7th
MWSB – 8th
HWSB – 8th
MWGP – 11th
